A marver is an essential piece of equipment in the glassmaker's workshop, used for centering and shaping a gather of glass, and for picking up additional glass as decoration on a gather before blowing. On the small furnace, we positioned our marvers in front of the gathering holes, basing this on our experiences of the previous year. This is a very convenient place for a marver, and shows why this is its traditional position.
We used kiln batts, but other materials such as iron or sandstone could be used. Our marvers had to be used wet, otherwise the hot glass would stick to them.
It was important to level the marvers and prevent them from rocking, hence the six daub pads seen in photograph 4.
The proximity of the marver to some of the cold face thermocouples increased the temperature readings as it reflected some of the heat back onto the cold face.
One of the marvers for the pot furnace was of the same design, but the other was in the form of a sandstone table to allow us to make slumped bowls. See this page for the pot furnace marvers photographs.
