Mould blown glass was extremely common throughout the Roman Empire.

Relatively simple vessels such as the range of prismatic bottles were made using smooth-sided stone moulds with interchangeable base design pieces.

The mould-blown square and hexagonal bottles represent Roman container ware, used for the transportation and storage of household goods, (liquids such as wine, vinegar, fish sauce, oils, etc.).

Hexagonal bottles are much less numerous than square bottles. They were produced in a range of sizes; we have chosen to reproduce a common small size.

Early examples have been found in mid 1st century AD levels at Stein in the Netherlands and Tenero, but they are more widespread during the later 1st to 2nd centuries AD. They continue to be produced until the end of the 2nd century AD, and examples of small hexagonal bottles have been found in 3rd entury AD graves in Normandy.

The bases of these bottles are usually decorated with patterns in relief. There are many variations, the exact significance of which is still not fully understood. They may be makers' marks, owners' marks, or relate to the original contents of the bottle. We have chosen to reproduce both some of the more common and most interesting patterns.
