Roman - Two-handled Flasks(THF)

These vessels were blown at our wood-fired furnace. They all have some attack from the furnace atmosphere on their outer surfaces - some more so than others. It usually shows as a dulling and milkiness on the surface. See this page for a short discussion on this phenomenon. Please look at the large photos by clicking on the thumbnail photos, although the effect is not always noticeable on them.

We do not make Two-handled Flasks to order - these are individual vessels that are in stock and can be purchased as seen.

Two-handled Flasks date to the mid 1st century AD. Our examples are based on three unprovenanced examples in the Ernesto Wolf Collection, Cat. Nos. 10 (Height 11.9cm), 11 (Height 11.15cm) and 12 (Height 7.8cm). Another example of Cat. No.10 has been found at Ashnak, Georgia, now in The Hermitage, St. Petersburg.

The shape is very much like that of an oil flask, and it is possible that this was their original use.
