Constructing the Firebox Floor
After finalising the position we sorted out some Roman tile fragments for the floor. We dug a c.2.5"-deep slot for the tiles, firmed it and laid the tiles on a bed of daub, taking care to keep them flat and horizontal. We filled the gaps with daub and backfilled around the edge of the tile floor with soil. This was a fairly straightforward job, and not as complex as making the firepit for the furnace. |

Installing the Lehr
Again, a fairly simple task and the sequence is shown in the photos at the top of this page, but with the addition of packing the gaps between the tile floor and the lehr wall with stones, and sealing around the base of the wall, both inside and outside, with daub. The blue rope held the wall pieces together, making it easier to fill the gaps between the floor and the wall with stones and daub. Final assembly took place several weeks later, closer to the date of the first firing. See this page in the 2019 write-up for more assembly details. |
