Lehr Disassembly

After taking down the side walls, we removed the end walls using the location holes for the metal rods.

This left the firebox, which by now was dry. After removing the shelf support bars we sawed it into six sections, drilled location holes and removed each piece.

Lehr Reassembly

Reassembly was a straightforward reversal of disassembly.

A point to note is the double lower shelf with two offcuts of thin (c.1cm) kiln batts acting as spacers which insulated the upper surface from the heat of the flames. Also, as the two end walls were moveable, they could be pushed together to squeeze the side walls and hold them firm, and then held in place by the tie rods.

The flat roof of reclaimed kiln batts which supported a three inch insulating layer of twelve expanded vermiculite bricks sat on a thin layer of ceramic fibre blanket.

Each door was finished by drilling through three vermiculite bricks and bolting them together with mild steel tie rods and flat plates.
