Daub Creation

The recipe and quantities that we used for daub was:
380kg grey clay (dry weight) in batches of 20kg
8 litres water per 20kg clay in a lidded plastic tub (this fills the tub)
1 tub full of chopped green hay dried overnight = 2kg hay per 20kg clay
4 litres of extra water added during the mixing operation

We made the hay from a 'meadow mix' of tall and short grasses and other plants (including daffodils, hogweed, plantain, etc.) which was chopped into short lengths using a garden shredder and spread out to partially dry overnight in the workshop next to the furnace. This prevented it from composting.

We reclaimed the clay from donations of old clay and sculptures from artists Amy Goodman and Vivien Mallock (both at Project Workshops), and from our landlady Mandy Atkinson-Willes. It had to be dried and broken into small lumps before adding it to the water. This ensured that the occurence of lumps of hard clay in the daub was minimised and the mix was homogenous.

Most of the clay we used was an ordinary grey clay, but about 40kg was 'Crank', a grogged clay which was rougher to mix.

We mixed the clay, hay and extra water in a plastic half-barrel, one tub of clay and one tub of hay at a time. We spread the daub out on cardboard sheets in the workshop to evaporate some of the water before storing it in the tubs and plastic bags ready for use.
